Classical Music… too boring?

May be… at first. But let me tell you a couple of hints about how to make it less boring. You will find classical music is full of wonders that deserve to be discovered.

Bored by classical music

Many people find classical music not interesting, and think it doesn’t even deserve a try.
Probably you too were introduced to it at school. Course programs mainly aim to follow educational schedules, and unfortunately doesn’t try to make it enjoyable.
Here are some advise I can give you to enter deeply (and with more fun!) into classical music.

You don’t HAVE TO like it

It is not a shame if you don’t like classical. You have your own music tastes, and no one can tell you they are wrong.
I am a classical music enthusiast. Surprisingly, I don’t like jazz. But I like disco music (trance, techno. Don’t tell anybody!). These are my tastes, not right or wrong, and I suppose they are very different than yours.

Classical Music doesn’t exist

History refers to “Classical Music” or “Classical Period” what was composed in late ‘700 and first ‘800: the era of Mozart and Beethoven. They are among the best composers of all times, but even I can find myself bored if I listen to them for some time.
Luckily, classical music (referring to the music genre, not the period) gives you the opportunity to explore different music periods, different composers and different ways to compose music.

Start with something you already know

Let’s try something to exit the “boring” stereotype.
Pick a melody you have already heard, maybe in a movie, and then listen to it with more focused ears.
Try, for example, to recognize the melody, and take a tour on what lives (musically speaking) around it.

How many instruments are playing on the stage? Is it a huge orchestra, or a small group of players?
What kind of atmosphere did the composer create: gloomy or radiant? Epic or lightweight?

Here some examples to start with

Also sprach Zarathustra (Richard Strauss)
main theme for “2001: A space odyssey” movie

The Valkyrie – Ride of the Valkyries (Richard Wagner)
great scene in “Apocalypse Now” movie

La Primavera (Antonio Vivaldi)
everybody knows it!
